played the phillies a lot over the last few years. the phillies clinched the national league east against the nationals. tonight, the nationals had a chance to return the favor thanks to a little help from the braves. their guys couldn't get anything going. kyle kendricks was dominant. but in pittsburgh, the pirates came through. a brave's lost also meant a national league east title. fans in d.c. found out immediately as the team went back into the dug out. everybody started celebrating and then it was time for the champagne to flow. the nats, your 2012 national league east champions. >> you've been dreaming about this, i'm sure, for years. is it what you imagined it would be? >> we have a great group of guys. i love everyone on this team. for the first time, this is pretty unbelievable. it's speechless. >> reporter: that's bryce harper. he's only 19 years old. he celebrated not with champagne, not with beer, but with apple cider. 23 cases of champagne was used in the celebration. here's a t-shirt that everybody's wearing tonight here at the park and everybody is going to be looking for

the philadelphia phillies. >> that's right. our colleague derek mcginty is live at nationals park with more on where this team has been and where they're hopefully going. d? >> reporter: oh, man, a lot of expectations around this team, but you not, it has been actually a pretty fast -- but you know, it has been actually a pretty fast process. in about an hour or 45 minutes or so they'll play the philadelphia phillies. if you look behind me, you can see the players warming up taking their batting practice loosening up for the big game tonight. i'm joined here in nats park by charlie f mr. oes, the voice of the nats. i know you're very excited because you sat here and watched the nats go from bad to good in a lot less time than anybody expected. >> when you think back to baseball's return in 2005 and the excitement that there was at rfk stadium that first year the team got off to a great start. the whole city was captivated by it and they were 19 games over .500 at the midway point with a 5 1/2 game lead over atlanta and faded in 2nd half and played 19 games under .500 wound up in last place

against the phillies, but it doesn't matter. the braves lost to the pirates and that was all we needed to clinch the division. derek is there tonight. >> reporter: it was the wildest experience you've had. as you mentioned the nats lost the game but won the n.l. east and that's all anybody will remember about this night. it was the ninth inning when the scoreboard read up in that park that the pittsburgh pirates knocked off the atlanta braves and the party started right away. people started getting the word on their smart phones. they started cheering. the nats came out of the dugout and began to get ready. the party moved to the locker room once the game was over. if you've not been inside a locker room when a pennant is won it is an experience. take a look at this. players everywhere, champagne everywhere, beer is everywhere. i saw the team walking around, very excited, very happy. everybody offering congratulations. they couldn't have been more sense of destiny for this team. remember, it's only a few years since the expose moved here all the way from canada. the team was terrible.

are taking a live look from nationals park. in about an hour they will take on the phillies in the last regular-season home game. fog could make it interesting. >> we see a few breaks in the clouds right there, which might help a little. >> good afternoon. i am cynne simpson. >> i am steve chenevey. let's get a look at our forecast with meteorologist jacqui jeras. >> we had to be patient today. fog was all across the metro area. dense fog advisory is have been cancelled. we look forward to a little brighter afternoon. this is a time lapse from the congressional country club in bethesda. finally we are getting a few breaks in the clouds. we still have some visibility issues off to the west,. 4 miles in hagerstown and 5 miles in winchester. that will improve for everybody. looking good. fog has been an issue as well up the east coast. there have been travel delays. flight's going into acordia or philadelphia or newark today delays of two hours set into those cities. -- into acordia airport. mostly cloudy tonight with maybe a sprinkle in our area. more on that coming up later. big changes

the division last night, but they've still got the phillys to deal with tonight. >> phillies aren't as dangerous as they norm will. they do have two games left. out of the park today, the players were strolling in very slowly into the national's clubhouse. i'm sure you can imagine why. busy celebrating last night. but the games go on. and the goon squad is in. that's the reserve guys for the nationals that are, that is, you know what i'm frying to say. those are the back ups. tonight, the goons were good. not your normal starting line-up, but they were ready for the lilies. the first start of the year, top three. he gets ty wigginton swinging. gives up one run in 3 2/3 innings. the shark getting the start in right field at the plate. takes this one to left. nice piece of opposite-field hitting right here. adam laroche scores. still tied, bottom of the sixth, adam one r.b.i. away from one hundred on the season. and here's a pretty good way to get it. out of the yard. his 33rd home run of the season. the second time he's hit that mark in his career. and he gets the old curtain call.

it will be poetic justice because as we know the phillies are in found and 1 more game and the nats will be nl east champions. we should note some things for you. here's what can happen tonight. first of all, if the nats win, they will win their first nl east pennant. even if they lose, if the braves lose to pittsburgh tonight, the nats will still win the division. but if the nats lose and the braves win, we have to wait yet another night for the nats to win and clinch the pennant. if they get rained out, we'll have to wait another night, too perhaps. we'll hope that doesn't happen. in the meantime there is a lot going on that took a long time to get the playoffs off here in washington, but it's also taken a long time to revive the neighborhood that the stadium is in. >> reporter: this is bruce johnson outside nats park. we're asking the question what happened to all the economic development promised for the area? >> we need some more bars and restaurants and hotels, everything down here. >> reporter: the fans, owners, city officials, business community, just about everybody are still waiting for
